# Add a student

> Create a student record, connect a guardian and enroll the student in a group in one go.

By default, owners, admins and managers can add students. Only owners and admins can set a student's password.

  Don't see this page or button? Your role doesn't include it. Ask your center's owner or an admin to give you the role you need.

## Add the student

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the form">
    In the sidebar, select **Students**, then select **Add student**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter personal details">
    Fill in **First name** and **Last name**. **Date of birth** and **Gender** are optional.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the branch">
    Under **Contact**, choose the **Branch**. **Phone** and **Address** are optional: students sign in with a student code, not a phone number, so a student without a phone can still use Cohort.

  <Step title="Connect a guardian (optional)">
    Under **Guardian**, enter the **Parent / Guardian phone**.

    * If someone in your center already has this number, Cohort shows who it is. Check that it's the right person, then select **Connect guardian**.
    * If the number is new, enter the guardian's first and last name in **Guardian name** and choose the **Relation**.

    To add the student without a guardian, leave the phone blank.

  <Step title="Enroll in a group (optional)">
    Under **Initial enrollment**, choose a **Group**. This section only appears when the branch you chose has groups.

## Let the student sign in

A new student can't sign in until you set a password for them. To set one:

    In the **Students** list, select the student.

  <Step title="Edit the student">
    At the top of the student's page, select the ⋯ button, then select **Edit**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set a password">
    Under **Access**, enter a **Password** of at least 8 characters, then select **Save student**.
