# Grading scales

> How Cohort's points, percentage and letter grading scales work, and what happens to marks already entered when you switch.

A group's grading scale sets how its teacher marks each lesson: as a number of points, a percentage, or a letter grade. Every group has exactly one scale at a time, chosen when the group is created and changeable at any time afterward.

## The three scales

| Scale | How a mark is entered | What you set |
| - | - | - |
| **Points** | A number from 0 up to the maximum you choose — for example, out of 10. | **Maximum points**, and optionally **Allow half-point scores** to permit marks like 7.5. |
| **Percentage** | A whole number from 0 up to the maximum you choose — usually 100. | **Maximum (%)** |
| **Letter** | Letter grades A–F are entered directly on the marks sheet. | Nothing — there's no maximum to set. |

<Note>
  If you don't set a scale when creating a group, Cohort defaults to **Points** out of 10. See [add a group](/en/admin/groups/add-a-group).
</Note>

## Changing the scale later

Open the group, select **Grading scale** from the **Group actions** menu, choose a different **Scale type**, and save.

Switching never changes marks a teacher already entered — each one keeps the scale it was marked under. If the group already has marks, Cohort tells you how many earlier scales it's keeping, so the group's full history stays readable even after a switch.

<Note>
  By default, owners and admins can change a group's scale at any time. Managers can only choose it while creating a new group.
