# Discount types

> The difference between a one-off discount applied to a single invoice and a standing discount attached to an enrollment.

A discount isn't one-off or standing by itself — every discount you [create](/en/admin/discounts/create-a-discount) works the same way until you decide how to use it. *One-off* means applying it to a single invoice, once. *Standing* means attaching it to a student's enrollment, so it applies automatically every month. The same discount can be used both ways, for different students, at the same time.

## One-off vs standing

| Type | How you apply it | How often it applies | Typical use |
| - | - | - | - |
| *One-off* | On an invoice, with **Apply discount** | Once, to the invoice you chose | A single discounted charge, a one-time promotion |
| *Standing* | On a student's **Enrollments** tab, in the **Standing discount** column | Automatically, to every invoice Cohort generates for that enrollment — until it expires or you remove it | A sibling discount, a scholarship, or another price agreed with one student |

<Note>
  A standing discount doesn't count toward the discount's **Usage**, however many months it applies — only applying it as a one-off does.
